SP #022: Sacred Rest
When Prayer Leads to Peace
Quote of the Week:
"Until we learn to be as comfortable with stillness as we are with noise, we will never know God as deeply as we could."
— Dallas Willard
Scripture Passages:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures." (Psalm 23:1-2)
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God... will guard your hearts." (Philippians 4:6-7))
Food For Thought:
In a culture that glorifies busyness, rest has become almost counter-cultural. Yet the Bible begins with God resting and commanding us to do the same. It's fascinating that the Hebrew word for rest, 'menuha,' doesn't just mean the absence of work—it implies an active, positive presence of peace.
Thomas Merton observed that "We cannot be at peace unless we are honestly at rest." This rest isn't laziness; it's strategic withdrawal. Jesus himself frequently withdrew to quiet places, not from weakness, but to maintain connection with His source of strength.
Consider that God commanded rest before the fall—meaning it's not just a response to our exhaustion, but part of our original design. Prayer, at its deepest level, is an invitation to this divine rest, where we cease striving and know that He is God.
Prayer Prompt:
Heavenly Father,
Teach us the rhythm of sacred rest. Help us trust You enough to stop, to breathe, to be still. When our minds race with concerns, guide us into Your peace that passes understanding. Show us that in resting, we declare our trust in Your sovereignty.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Worship Song of the Week:
The gentle, contemplative nature of this song perfectly captures our theme of finding rest in God's presence, with lyrics that speak to letting go and finding peace in stillness.
Engagement Challenge:
This week, practice the "5-5-5" rule: Five minutes of silence before God in the morning, five minutes of gratitude at noon, and five minutes of releasing your burdens before bed. Don't pray for anything—just rest in His presence. Note how this rhythm affects your peace levels throughout the day.
