SP #020: Sacred Interruptions

When God Disrupts Our Schedule

Quote of the Week:

"God never ceases to speak to us, but the noise of the world without and the tumult of our passions within bewilder us and prevent us from listening to him."
— François Fénelon

Scripture Passages:

  1. "Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

  2. "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." (Luke 5:16)

  3. "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27))

Food For Thought:

In our hyper-connected world, silence has become almost revolutionary. We fill every moment with noise, activity, and digital distraction. Yet throughout church history, the greatest saints understood what A.W. Tozer meant when he said, "Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a nap." They grasped that God often speaks in disruptions—those sacred interruptions to our carefully planned days.

Consider Moses, tending his flocks when a burning bush appeared, or Samuel, interrupted from sleep by God's voice. These weren't convenient moments, but they were divine appointments. As Oswald Chambers noted, "Prayer is not a preparation for work, it is the work."

The modern obsession with productivity can make us view prayer as an interruption to our "real work." But what if these apparent interruptions—the nudge to pray, the unexpected quiet moment, the disruption to our schedule—are actually God's invitations to deeper communion?

Prayer Prompt:

Father,
Help us to welcome Your divine interruptions. Teach us to recognize Your voice amid the noise of our daily lives. Give us the courage to step away from our schedules when You call, and wisdom to see Your invitations in our disruptions. Make us more aware of Your presence than our presentations, more attuned to Your Spirit than our schedules.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Worship Song of the Week:

This song's contemplative lyrics about finding stillness and hearing God's voice in moments of quiet perfectly capture our theme of sacred interruptions and the beauty of being present with God.

Engagement Challenge:

This week, schedule three 10-minute "divine interruption" periods each day. When the time comes, stop whatever you're doing—regardless of how important it seems—and simply be still before God. Don't bring an agenda; just create space for Him to speak. Keep a journal of what you experience in these moments.
