SP #012: Teach Us To Pray
Why the disciples never asked for preaching skills & miracles
Quote of the Week:
“No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying.”
— Leonard Ravenhill, Why Revival Tarries
Scripture Passages:
1. “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)
2. “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2)
3. “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16)
Food For Thought:
We don’t really see in the scriptures the disciples asking Jesus how to preach, perform miracles, or lead multitudes. They asked Him how to pray. This request reveals something profound: they recognized that the source of Jesus’ power was not in His public ministry skills or strategy but in His private intimacy with the Father.
Prayer is not just an action—it’s a posture of dependency, a declaration that we need God’s presence, wisdom, and power. It’s through prayer that we are transformed and empowered to live lives of eternal significance. Colossians 4:2 calls us to devotion in prayer—a persistent, watchful, and thankful engagement with God. And James reminds us of prayer’s potency when aligned with righteousness.
Revival in our personal lives, churches, and cities won’t come from clever strategies and tactics but from men and women who cry out to God in humble, fervent prayer. Imagine what God could do in your family, your church, and your city if we fully embraced this call to relentless intercession.
Prayer Prompt:
Heavenly Father,
Teach us to pray as Jesus taught His disciples. Stir our hearts to long for Your presence, to seek Your will, and to cry out for Your kingdom to come. Make us watchful, persistent, and thankful in prayer. Lord, may our prayers be powerful and effective, not for our own sake but for Your glory. We ask that You awaken hearts in our families, churches, and cities to turn toward You. Move mightily in our time, Lord, and use us to spark a fresh wave of revival.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
